1st Encounter in Koper - Capodistria

On Saturday 25th of January, BrokenNews project was launched in Koper, Slovenia, within the headquarters and with the collaboration of the local Italian Union. The project will last 6 months, from January to June 2020, as part of the one-year Digital Citizenship project promoted by the association #MaidireMai - #NikoliReciNikoli.

Main objective is to support the debate among young people, aged between 16 and 30, about the use of speech and language in the virtual world. The focus will be on the issues generated by the spread of fake news and hate speech, any kind of communication, diffused especially on social networks, that fosters hostility and verbal abuse.

The continuous merging between the online and offline world leads to the necessity of realizing activities and workshops about digital citizenship education, in order to provide the basis to web browsing consciously and make young people aware of the possibilities and limits they can found in Internet. In fact, new forms of social relations are established in virtual communities, often polluted by distorting phenomena of a communicative and informative nature.

The project’s actions try to elaborate strategies in order to identify and contrast these phenomena by involving the so-called digital citizens, especially young people who, in this context, can be educated, informed and expressed.
As established during this first meeting, BrokenNews’ specific objective is stimulating a greater critical spirit in young people, in order to form a mindful, informed and active citizenship. That means a digital generation able to analyze, interpret and evaluate the information received, to verify the news and to use the available tools in a responsible and civic way.

BrokenNews has the added value of being a cross-border project, the geographical area of reference includes Friuli Venezia Giulia and the Istrian region, and this allows the involvement of young Italians as well as Croatians and Slovenians.
Therefore, the initiatives planned during the project implementation will take place, from time to time, in several cities into the three countries interested.
As consequence, the topics will be approached from different points of view, giving
young beneficiaries the opportunity to express themselves and share ideas and
opinions on the matters covered by the project’s activities.

Digital Citizenshipproject is funded by Friuli Venezia Giulia Region within the “Active Citizenship Announcement Call”, in accordance with article 18, paragraphs 1 to 2 bis of Regional Law 5/2012 and DPReg 183/2014 and the agreement for the implementation of the Intesa established during the Unified Conference on the allocation of the "National Fund for Youth Policies- contributions year 2018/2019.
